While exploring the Canyon Lake shore with his dad and his uncle, Declan Schreiber came across a large ammonite fossil. Declan's dad, Gabriel, reached out to the museum to ask if we would be interested in adding the fossil to our collections. However, the fossil was located on federal land and after reaching out to Army Corp of Engineers, Marcus Schimank, gave the museum permission to retrieve the fossil. Declan's Uncle Harry, stepped in to guide us to its exact location so an extraction plan could be made.
After assessing the terrain of the fossil's location, we decided a four-wheel drive gator or similar vehicle was needed. Dylan, Bret, and Chris with W.O.R.D volunteered to help by providing the muscle needed to lift the approximately 100+ pound fossil and the gator to transport it off the lake shore. Jason with Canyon Lake Outdoor Living coordinated with his neighbor Henry to provide access through their property so the fossil could be easily reached.
Dylan and his W.O.R.D. Crew returned to the museum to help unload and place the ammonite fossil on display. Come see this amazing fossil at The Heritage Museum! Thank you to all who made this possible.
